Problem: As the Covid-19 pandemic descended in 2020, Thermo Fisher needed to rapidly scale their new PCR covid testing division. In a world of uncertainty, Thermo Fisher's testing division helped save lives and deliver a return to normalcy.

Solution:

At Bain and Company, I was one of the strategy consultants and product designers attached to the Thermo Fisher Covid test scaling project.

For this project, I built strategic dashboards to identify Covid-19 infection hotspots using public government data. We used these to dashboards to identify countries and cities that might spike in a demand for Covid tests in the weeks to come, and then ensured testing supply to those countries.

With data from the hotspot dashboards, I helped develop Thermo Fisher's global partnership strategy, where we found health organizations and nonprofits partners worldwide (e.g. Unicef, the World Bank) to help distribute Thermo Fisher Covid tests to hospitals and institutions in need.

Finally, our Bain team also helped stand up Thermo Fisher's commercial sales team, where we coordinated weekly regional sales strategy meetings, and transitioned their scrappy Excel "CRM" to full Salesforce CRM in 2 months.

Outcome:

We helped Thermo Fisher go from zero to 500+ million PCR tests shipped that year. Within 10 months of its inception, the new testing division came to account for 25% of the company’s global revenue.

While I can't share the specific dashboard designs and strategy slides I worked on due to consulting confidentiality agreements, this project had such a big impact on Thermo Fisher and Bain & Company that you can read about it on Bain's website here.
