Shush Monthly 1: Isle of Gods: the dazzling Wes Anderson

May 2, 2018

With the recent release of Isle of Dogs, I have once again dived head-first into the world of Wes Anderson. I jumped down the internet rabbit-hole and curated this collection of videos, articles, and music for those looking for a bit more Wes Anderson in their lives.

In this month’s SHUSH publication, you’ll find all things Wes Anderson, retro style, beautiful cinematography, meticulously curated photography, and some words on man’s best friend.

VIDEO

kogonada

I have fallen in love with kogonada in two ways, first discovering his beautiful debut movie, Columbus, which I watched at Shattuck Cinemas in Berkeley, and then discovering his Vimeo channel during my Wes Anderson binge.

Wes Anderson // Centered

A beautiful compilation of Wes Anderson’s best, centered shots.

Wes Anderson // From Above

Even more Wes Anderson, but this time, from above.

Kubrick // One-Point Perspective

Cinephiles often compare the styles of Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick (director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, and A Clockwork Orange). Although their movies vary greatly in plot, their directing and cinematography styles can be profoundly similar.

FOOD & DRINK

Playing along the Wes Anderson's beautiful retro colors…

Los Angeles: The Dankness Dojo

Let’s first take a moment to appreciate the name of Modern Times Beer’s new Brewery in Downtown L.A.

Hands down, the most incredible food or drink institution I’ve ever set my foot in. First the decor draws you in.

Each wall has a curated art piece, from exploding-out-of-the-wall Piñatas to a giant Lite-Bright mural to a diving helmet coffee tap, the Modern Times Dankness Dojo has it all. Bathrooms and columns are covered floor to ceiling in old comics, giving the entire bar a Retro 90’s aesthetic.

Then, the beer. With the Hazy IPA trend ripping through the nation, Modern Times is sure not one to miss out. In April, they had multiple hazy IPAs on tap, and many other beers for connoisseurs to explore.

PODCAST

In Dog We Trust - This American Life

This hilarious spoken-word piece by David Sedaris on the connections between dogs, cats, and the people who care for them.

COLORS Youtube Channel

"COLORS is a unique aesthetic music platform showcasing diverse and exceptional talent from all around the globe."

Basically, COLORS is a beautiful youtube channel that pairs colors, outfits, aesthetic, and live performances together for an ethereal listening experience. In my opinion, many of the performances that artists sing on the channel are better than the recorded versions.
